Today's information technology is characterised by an ever higher degree of openness and interconnection. Systems become more and more powerful with regard to processing speed and storage capability.

IT moves ever further and deeper into business, technical and private sectors, for which it operates as shared resource. Under the headings Trends and Characteristics, we highlight today's information technology, under Problems we summarise their weaknesses. Under Conclusion, we state that a new approach is needed to overcome them.
